Kaitlyn Johnson provides guidance to both domestic and international clients on regulatory matters related to food, drugs, dietary supplements, medical devices, food additives, and animal feed, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and international laws. She advises on food and allergen labeling, food safety, and advertising regulations.
In addition, Kaitlyn advises clients on tobacco and e-vapor regulations by providing state and federal legislative counsel to tobacco and e-vapor suppliers, retailers, distributors, and manufacturers.
Prior to joining Keller and Heckman, Kaitlyn received her M.S. in Environmental Policy and Sustainability Management and worked at a New York-based environmental consulting firm. While in law school, Kaitlyn served as the Staff Editor for the Journal of Health Care Law & Policy, President of the Food Law Society, Career Chair for the National Food Law Student Network, and as a member of the Maryland Environmental Law Society. Kaitlyn also clerked for the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission, working on administrative law and regulatory enforcement issues. As both a Summer Associate and Law Clerk for Keller and Heckman, she conducted regulatory research, evaluated new ingredient usage, and tracked developments in state and local laws for firm clients.
Representative Matters
- Reviewed clients’ food labeling and promotional materials, providing advice on appropriate names, ingredient declarations, nutrition and allergen labeling, nutrient content claims, structure/function claims, and marketing claims related to GMOs, organic products, sustainability, and novel/alternative proteins and ingredients
- Assessed regulatory status of dietary supplement ingredients
- Advised clients regarding tobacco and e-vapor regulation as it relates to the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, and assisted clients in preparing Substantial Equivalence (SE) reporting to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
