Jason Schmidt, Ph.D., is a chemist who works closely with the firm’s attorneys on technically complex matters serving a wide range of clients in the food, food packaging, and chemical control industries.

He has significant experience in reviewing the chemistry and toxicology of food additives and food packaging materials based on the regulatory framework of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and compatible regulatory agencies around the world, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR). Jason’s technical background in polymer synthesis, biopolymers, and analytical chemistry enables him to aid clients in creating analytical strategies for navigating regulatory requirements in a global marketplace.

Jason has extensive experience with product formulation and design, analytical test method development, and Quality Systems Regulations (QSRs). He develops specialized test protocols for paper and plastic packaging materials and assists clients with the interpretation of complex analytical data. He also conducts audits at clients’ facilities to ensure compliance with current good manufacturing practice (cGMP) requirements.

When required, Jason provides evaluations to support classification, labeling, and data submissions under the EU’s Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation and offers technical support to firm attorneys on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) regulations.

Prior to re-joining Keller and Heckman in 2024, Jason was Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs for a major producer of biopolymers and has served as a global food-contact and chemical control leader for major corporations. He was a staff scientist at Keller and Heckman from 2010 to 2018. Earlier in his career, he held positions as an analytical chemist in the consumer product and medical device industries.
