Herb Estreicher Quoted in the Chemical Watch article, "'Major Course Correction' Needed for TSCA Risk Evaluation"

Keller and Heckman Partner Herb Estreicher, Ph.D., was quoted in the Chemical Watch article, “’Major Course Correction’ Needed for TSCA Risk Evaluation.”

The article discusses how attendees at a recent Chemical Watch event determined that a “serious rethink” is needed on how the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducts TSCA risk evaluations. Some attendees believe that, as the agency moves to complete its first ten risk evaluations, and shifts focus to the next 20 high-priority chemicals, the EPA should increase its collection of data to support its risk findings and address overarching issues on how it conducts its existing chemical reviews. Many believe EPA should go back to the drawing board and significantly adjust its risk evaluation process.

"The quality of the risk assessments currently being conducted by EPA needs to be improved," Dr. Estreicher said, reflecting on lessons learned from the first ten chemical reviews. He also noted that another "great failing" of the EPA’s risk evaluation work has been a lack of information on the real-world use and exposures.

Dr. Estreicher concluded, "serious effort should be focused on trying to find a solution to this problem."
