Herb Estreicher Cited in Article on Pentachlorophenol

Keller and Heckman Partner Herb Estreicher was cited in the Bloomberg Law article, “Pentachlorophenol Should not be Added to Stockholm Treaty, Draft Risk Profile Says.” The article discusses how the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) secretariat released for comment on April 17 a committee’s draft risk profile recommending that pentachlorophenol not be included in the treaty as a POP, meaning the committee provisionally concluded global efforts to ban, eliminate, or restrict the chemical are not warranted.

National contact points in countries that are parties to the convention or interested in its implementation—such as the United States, which is not a party but participates in its implementation as an observer—have until May 27 to provide the secretariat comments.

If, after the comment period, the convention’s Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee approves the draft recommendation against listing the wood preservative in the treaty, that would end the chemical’s review, said Herb.
