David Joy Quoted in Scientific American Article on FDA’s Revised Rule on the Word ‘Healthy’
Keller and Heckman Partner David Joy was quoted in the Scientific American article, “The FDA Is Changing What Foods Can Be Called ‘Healthy.’” The article addresses the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recently revised regulations regarding what foods can be labeled as “healthy” when that term is used as an implied nutrient content claim. The agency is also creating a “healthy” logo that manufacturers will be able to use, only if the product meets the new standards.
Will this new rule hold up with the incoming Trump administration? According to David, it likely will. “I don’t see the next administration fighting it. It’s a voluntary label claim,” he said. “FDA is updating the criteria for ‘healthy’ claims on food labels in line with current dietary guidelines, and this isn’t a big regulatory burden for the food industry.”
