David Ettinger and Jenny Li Quoted in Singapore Business Review Article on the Food Safety and Security Bill
Keller and Heckman Partner David Ettinger and Counsel, Keller and Heckman Representative Office, Jenny Li were quoted in the Singapore Business Review article, “Food industry told to harness blockchain amidst stricter safety rules.” The article discusses Singapore’s Food Safety and Security bill, passed by Parliament on January 8, 2025.
“The bill introduces detailed requirements for food traceability and recall records, ensuring that unsafe food products can be quickly identified and removed from the market,” said David. He also added that the bill would cover wider food supply activities, including donations and free distribution, not just sales.
Jenny noted that first-time corporate offenders will face a fine of as much as $50,000, while individual violators will face a $25,000 fine, a one-year jail term, or both.
The bill consolidates and updates food-related legislation into one comprehensive framework, simplifying the process for market players, including importers, according to Jenny. However, Jenny added that operators may still need to refer to other regulations, such as the Singapore Food Regulations, for specific requirements (e.g., food labeling standards and use of food additives).
