Craig Simpson Quoted in a Bloomberg Law Article on European PFAS Rules Affecting the U.S.
Keller and Heckman Partner Craig Simpson was quoted in the Bloomberg Law article, “US Food Faces PFAS Challenge as European Rules, Policies Expand.” The article indicates that European limits on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may affect U.S. exports and the domestic food supply. Earlier this year, a European regulation limiting the amounts of four PFAS that can be in meat, poultry, fish, and eggs raised in or exported to Europe went into effect.
“We’re in the calm before the storm,” commented Craig. “A shipment’s exceedance could have a huge international impact on sales of US products.” According to Craig, governments often give regulated parties some time to get accustomed to new requirements, so it could take some time before a U.S. shipment is stopped at the European border. Or “it could happen tomorrow,” warned Craig.
More EU PFAS regulations are expected to come. “The EU also is working towards legally binding PFAS limits in feed,” said Craig.
