Chemical Legislation in Michigan

Promotion of Green Chemistry for Sustainable Economic Development and Protection of Public Health

Executive Directive No. 2006-6, signed October 17, 2006, directs state departments and agencies to “seek pollution prevention and sustainable economic development through green chemistry.” The state’s Green Chemistry Program is based on 12 principles that include chemical innovation and redesign. The Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for state coordination, and, with the Michigan Green Chemistry Roundtable, released a strategy to promote “research, development, and commercialization of innovative and practical technologies that prevent pollution through cleaner, cheaper, smarter chemistry.” This strategy is currently being implemented through the Michigan Green Chemistry Clearinghouse, which is a partnership with educational and industry groups to develop and make publicly available green chemistry information and resources.
